I’m Indian and I suppose my race and skin color, and my experience of living in primarily white places for long durations informs my perspective here. And honestly, I am a little amazed at how many comments here are hellbent on canceling your entire experience, and your worldview.

Microaggressions are such a real part of PoC lives that we can’t help but make little records of them as we go on with our businesses. And they remain one of the most ignored, underplayed and/or denied aspects of modern racism, at least from where I am standing.

A friend of mine, who incidentally happens to be Latin American by descent but has lived a very privileged, very white life in Texas and New York, visited me here in Delhi recently. If you have had a chance to interact with updates from our part of the world, you would know that we aren’t exactly the snake-charmers that the world has made us out to be (no thanks to Coldplay’s Hymn for the Weekend music video in the least). While I gave him my own room to crash in and my home cooked food to eat, he had the gall to look very surprised and very thrown by the fact that we had Amazon here, that we have super fast internet and streaming services on our smart TVs, that our subway systems are clean and efficient, and that I, an Indian teacher of English, had managed to set up a digital classroom with 3D projection on my smartboard and Wi-Fi enabled seating.

All I kept saying was, ‘why do you seem this surprised' and he couldn’t give me any valid answer.

Sorry, long share here but I really just wanted to say that as a PoC but more so as a human, I feel you, I believe your side and your take and respect the response and reaction you had to something that is clearly and undeniably racially motivated.
